Flammable and Combustible Liquids in Industrial Operations

This session will provide an overview of NFPA codes and standards applicable to areas where flammable and combustible liquids are used. The fire protection system design criteria from these codes and standards will be reviewed as will the potential fire types that may be encountered, including static pool, flowing two and three dimensional, and pressurized releases. Additionally, the shortcomings and gaps of these criteria will be reviewed. Standards and codes included in this review are NFPA 11, 13, 15, 16, 30, 35, and 36. (Note that storage of flammable or combustible liquids will not be addressed.)

David Nugent is a Senior Consultant with Global Risk Consultants. He is a principal member of the NFPA 30 technical committee and has over 34 years of experience. He is a senior member of AIChE and a professional member of the SFPE. He has written numerous publications on ignitable liquids and reactive chemicals. He is a graduate of Rutgers University (BA in Chemistry) and recipient of the Finnegan Award from the SFPE.

Robert Benedetti, National Fire Protection Association
Robert Benedetti is the Principal Flammable Liquids Engineer at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and is a registered Professional Engineer in Massachusetts. Mr. Benedetti began his career at NFPA as a Staff Chemical Engineer in 1974 before taking his current role in 1986. Prior to joining NFPA, Mr. Benedetti worked as a Loss Prevention Field Engineer for the Factory Insurance Association. He holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University, Boston MA. He is a Fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is also a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Electrostatics Society of America.
