The session will focus on specific challenges in health care occupancies, including flammable and combustible liquids, tissue processors, recycling equipment, and any special requirements from NFPA 101, Life Safety Code; NFPA 45, Standard on Fire Protection for Laboratories Using Chemicals; and NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code.

Sharon Gilyeat, Koffel Associates Sharon Gilyeat, PE, has a BS in Fire Protection Engineering and over 30 years of experience. As a federal employee, she was responsible for the development of fire protection and life safety policy and training. She is a Principal for Koffel and supervises a team of engineers. Her work includes life safety consulting as well as system engineering design. She has developed and taught courses on NFPA 101, the FSES, and NFPA 99. She currently is an instructor for the CMS, Basic Life Safety Code course. Ms. Gilyeat serves on the Health Care Emergency Management and Security Technical Committee for NFPA 99, is past chair and current member for the NFPA 82 Technical Committee, and serves as the Chair for the NFPA 115 Technical Committee. She is a past Maryland State Fire Commissioner.
William Higgins, Koffel Associates William Higgins specializes in the areas of Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Design, Fire Protection and Life Safety Surveys, and Life Safety Code(r) Assessments, including Joint Commission Statement of Conditions(tm) preparation. He also has experiences in building, life safety, and fire code analysis. In July 2014, he joined Koffel Associates, Inc., as a Fire Protection Engineer. His past employment includes working as a Fire Protection Engineer for Whitman, Requardt, & Associates, LLP and for Hughes Associates, Inc. William is a member of NFPA and SFPE.
