This session will present the results of a Fire Protection Research Foundation workshop held in November 2015 where 15 local jurisdictions presented innovative programs for the use of data to inform their fire prevention inspection and enforcement programs.

Kathleen Almand, Fire Protection Research Foundation Kathleen Almand, Vice President of Research at NFPA, is responsible for its affiliated Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF) and its fire analysis, research, and library functions. She has an MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada, is a registered professional engineer in the State of Maryland, and is a Fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. Prior to joining FPRF in 2004, Kathleen was the Executive Director of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and held research and management positions with the Civil Engineering Research Foundation, the American Iron and Steel Institute, and the National Academy of Sciences.
Len Garis, City of Surrey Fire Department Len Garis is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice & Associate to the Centre for Social Research at the University of the Fraser Valley, a member of the Affiliated Research Faculty at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, a faculty member of the Institute of Canadian Urban Research Studies at Simon Fraser University and Fire Chief for the City of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. He joined the Surrey Fire Service in 1998 and has worked in the fire service and related fields since 1980. Chief Garis believes strongly that long-range vision, planning and innovation can reduce costs, improve efficiency and enhance services and public safety. Several of these initiatives have garnered awards and recognition for the City of Surrey in the past decade, including the Union of B.C. Municipalities Community Excellence Awards, a Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Award for Public Safety, recognition from the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General and in 2013 a Community Health and Safety Award from the International City/County Management Association.
Roger Parker, Avondale Fire & Medical Department, AZ Roger Parker has served as Division Chief/Fire Marshal with Avondale Fire & Medical (AZ) for the past 12 years. Over the past few years Roger has been transitioning the fire prevention division to the community risk reduction model using cloud based and tablet technology. Previously, he served at South Metro Fire Rescue in Colorado for 16 years, where he advanced through the ranks from Fire Inspector to Division Chief/Fire Marshal. In 2013, Roger achieved the Fire Marshal Designation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He also holds certifications from the International Arson Investigators Association and the International Code Council.
