Scene Safety for the Fire Investigator
Jeffrey Pauley, Bedford County Fire & Rescue

While fire scenes can be dangerous for anyone, there are some unique issues facing a fire investigator--whether they are a public or private fire investigator or even a fire fighter who helps extinguish the fire and then has to do an origin and cause determination. The presenter will review pertinent general fire service research as well as the somewhat more limited fire investigator-specific research, with a particular emphasis on toxic gases. He will also discuss how to recognize acute toxicity signs and symptoms, and the precautionary actions that all fire investigators can take to mitigate these problems. The presentation directly relates to NFPA 1033, Section 4.1.3; NFPA 921, Chapter 13; and several of the Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives.
