Student Safety in Science Labs
Andrew Minister, Battelle

Every year, many students are burned or injured during science demonstrations. In November 2013, the US Chemical Safety Board published a safety video to highlight the problem and to urge school administrators to implement changes to protect students; yet such incidents continue to occur. The 2015 edition of NFPA 45 has a new chapter that focuses on preventing these accidents and minimizing the hazard to the students. This presentation will examine the causes of these events and present controls and methods designed to prevent injuries while meeting the new requirements that are retroactive for schools.
