Fire Dynamics--From the Lab to the Fire Ground
Daniel Madrzykowski, UL

Great strides have been made in improving civilian fire safety and reducing the number of structure fires, yet the rate of traumatic firefighter fatalities on the fire ground has increased. Why? Research has shown that as construction methods and fuel loads have changed, the behavior of fires has also changed. Researchers, in partnership with fire departments, have demonstrated non-traditional firefighting tactics through laboratory and field experiments on the impact of ventilation and exterior attack. These concepts are now being implemented successfully across the country. This session will address ventilation limited fires, flow paths, and pushing fire and will feature videos of real scale fire experiments as well as LoDD incident simulations that connect the challenge firefighters face with the science-based tactical solutions.
